Adele Schwartz Benzaken, MD, PhD, is Medical Director of AHF's Global Program and a physician and public health leader who has spent her career making sexual health care more accessible, practical, and free from judgment. Her first major HIV project focused on sex workers, beginning a lifelong commitment to working alongside people and communities too often overlooked, stigmatized, or excluded from care. Her work has taken her from sex-worker and prison populations to gay communities and other men who have sex with men, as well as Indigenous communities deep in the Brazilian Amazon. Before joining AHF, Dr. Benzaken served as Director of the Brazilian Ministry of Health's Department of HIV, AIDS, Tuberculosis, Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections. She is also a mother of three and proud grandmother of five. Across decades of work in HIV and STI prevention, care, and public health, Dr. Benzaken has built her career around a simple belief: sexual health should be something we can talk about openly, honestly, and without shame.
